Affordable Tilt-In-Space Wheelchairs
Kyaro Assistive Tech provides mobility solutions in Tanzania for individuals with disabilities. Many of their users have contractures or spinal deformities that make traditional wheelchairs painful, leading to pressure sores and constant discomfort.
Tilt-in-space wheelchairs solve this by allowing users to adjust their position and stay seated comfortably for hours. But existing designs cost over $2,000 and use complex systems that can't be manufactured locally.
Our Solution: We created a simplified mechanism that can be entirely made in Tanzania for just $47.55—a 98% cost reduction. Our prototype will enable Kyaro to launch a new line of accessible tilt-in-space wheelchairs, bringing life-changing comfort to their community.
